The Itsik Zhelonek Warsaw kleynkunst project continues
I'm still recording songs found in the little booklets printed by record seller Itzik Zhelonek to sell his 78s back in the mid-1830s in Warsaw Poland. It made me sad that these were his favorite songs, and he said they were big hits, but they've been forgotten. This one is an example. Sung at the time by Herman Fenigstein, who was a big star, but he's also forgotten now.
I keep track of this project at a blog, Polish Jewish Cabaret, and at Yiddish Theater Songs. The first cd of songs from Itzik's collection is In Odess: songs from Warsaw. The second will come out in the fall.
