News from the Chapel Hill News

"Raspberries to the ambitious but inadequately equipped would-be thief who tried to make off with an entire ATM in Hillsborough last week.

"Whether it was a long-planned scheme or a spur-of-the-moment decision, we don't know. But in the wee hours of Saturday morning, the culprit or culprits swiped a backhoe that had been left at a nearby construction site and used it to pry the ATM off its foundations.

"He -- or she, for all we know -- backed a pickup truck into position and dropped the ATM into the bed of the truck.

"Visions of a quick getaway may have danced in the thieves' heads, assuming nobody would have noticed an ATM trundling down the highway.

"Should have used a bigger truck. The weight of the machine buckled the knees of the lightweight pickup. It wasn't going anywhere. When law enforcement officers arrived, they found the backhoe, truck and ATM -- but no suspects."

When that one was in the Orange County paper, I read it out loud to my family. I can't picture what the thieves were thinking - but now they lost a pickup truck too!

I thought the whole thing with the hospital employees and the parking was ridiculous too. Selling spaces for parking is one thing - but not interfering with the hospital! It shows a strange sense of priorities.
