A Skeptic's Complaint considered.
At Two Percent Company -- site of this week's Skeptics' Circle -- it's Allison DuBois Week. Allison DuBois is the real-live woman on whom the show "Medium" has been based, a psychic who supposedly helps the police with puzzling crimes.
Simplistically abstracted, Two Percent's complaint is that Allison is not really a psychic. A very well argued case, by the way!
But, see illustration.
False psychicness aside, I like Medium because
- I often feel lonely Monday night and Patricia Arquette is good company;
- Jake Weber (Joe, the husband) is cute and has an incredibly sexy voice.

I always liked P. Arquette, and that Josh guy was good in Dawn of the Dead, but i still haven't seen the show yet.
We once had a translation job about psychic something (we tried not to, by quoting an exorbitant price but the stupid man accepted it) and both ended up fascinated by ectoplasm. (Where did the idea COME from?) Ever since then, every time one of us has a bit of lint or something the other cries, 'ECTOPLASM!' and picks it off.
Just to be clear, we have no problem at all with television or movies that portray fantastic events. Some of our favorite entertainment falls into this category (Ghostbusters comes to mind).
So, it isn't the show Medium that we have a problem with. It may well be an excellent show (we don't really watch network TV, so we haven't seen it). It's the "based on a true story" part that we don't like.
PS - We will say that Patricia Arquette is pretty easy on the eyes...
Thanks for checking out our site,

Jane,
I am with you 100% on "Joe" (Jake Weber). I'd watch the show just to catch a glimpse of him each week. ;)
